Co-regulation: a Parents’ Superpower

by | Oct 22, 2021

Seven years ago a little girl was deteriorating from a plethora of mysterious symptoms. The most highly trained physicians and clinicians had no name for her condition, which also meant no treatment. Her Mom tried everything and felt powerless to help her.

That’s because just seven years ago, people didn’t talk about young children developing compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress, and that it can be just as devastating.

You probably guessed, but the little girl was my daughter. The three-year process of trying to get her help is what led me to discovering Eric Gentry. Her condition was defined, but even better, so was the treatment. I needed to offer her co-regulation from a relaxed muscle body.

The clinicians and physicians who treated that 7, 8 and 9 year-old girl threw around all sorts of diagnoses and predicted a worrisome future. They were wrong. Very wrong.

Yesterday was her 16th birthday, and it was amazing to reflect how the simple but not easy process of me offering her co-regulation is the most potent cure on the planet. Forward-Facing offers the world the opportunity for generational change, and I’m proud to be part of it.

Oh, and stay clear of her right hooks…
